One thing that people have been telling me about my Ultimate Scabies Treatment Guide is that it’s quite expensive to buy all the treatments. In my treatment guide, I outlined about six different treatments that I thought you should use to kill scabies effectively. Those were: clove oil, tea tree oil, permethrin, ivermectin, sulfur and neem (you can check out the guide here).
Of course, I don’t know exactly how much it would cost each of you because I’m not selling them, but if you buy them all on Amazon it could easily come to over $100, which is quite pricey.
Therefore, in this guide I’m going to give you the bare minimum needed to treat scabies effectively, and hopefully this will help you battle your scabies problem and return to health, without breaking your bank account.
The prescription treatment: Permethrin cream
If you had to choose only one treatment, I’m going to recommend permethrin cream.
Permethrin is the standard prescription treatment for scabies and it works. It has been shown to work in multiple studies, and it’s the first thing your doctor will give to you when you’re diagnosed.
The reason I don’t like permethrin personally is because it’s toxic. It is an insecticide, which means it’s poisonous, and obviously smearing a poisonous substance all over your skin isn’t good for you.
However, it doesn’t kill you, obviously. The human skin is strong, and it can handle permethrin just fine. If you have scabies, a few days of irritated skin is far better than months and months of itching. Because it’s the strongest treatment we know of, this is the one I recommend if you’re trying to treat scabies on a budget.
The cheapest way to get permethrin
The cheapest way to get permethrin cream is to make it yourself.
Remember, permethrin is the standard ingredient in insecticides. That means you find it in flea bombs, bug sprays, pesticides and so on. You can just pick it off the shelf and any pest control store.
Here’s the other interesting thing: The permethrin cream sold by pharmaceutical companies for scabies is simply a regular body lotion mixed with 5% permethrin. I’m sure there are some other things in there too, but the only active ingredient needed for the treatment to work, is permethrin.
Luckily for you, permethrin can be bought with a few clicks on Amazon.
Here’s the permethrin that I recommend people use:
It’s a high quality permethrin that’s been used by many people to treat scabies. You can order it by clicking here.
However, there’s a catch. You can’t just use it straight out of the bottle. This permethrin solution is 10% permethrin, and the safest strength to apply to your skin is 5%. Therefore, you need to mix it with a moisturizer or body lotion so you can safely apply it to your body.
I recommend using a standard body moisturizer like this:
To get 5% permethrin, simply mix equal parts of the permethrin solution and the moisturizer that I’ve linked above. That will give you a 5% permethrin cream. Pretty simple, no?
If you look at the Amazon reviews of the product, that’s exactly what many people have been doing with pretty good success.
Buying both these should only cost you around $20, and if you already have a moisturizer lying around the house, you’ll only need to buy the permethrin which is just $11.
If you’re looking for the cheapest treatment possible, this is it.
The great thing about this is even a small bottle of the permethrin will be much more than one person needs, so you can mix up enough for the whole family to use. As I’ve written many times before, it’s important to treat the whole household! If just one scabies mite survives on someone, it can lay eggs and restart the entire scabies infestation all over again. This is when treating scabies gets really costly, as each bottle of prescription permethrin cream can cost over $10. If you need to buy two bottles for 3-5 people, that can easily cost you close to $100. If you buy a big bottle of permethrin such as this, you’ll save a lot of money.
Other things you should know!
This is important: The one thing that determines whether your permethrin cream works isn’t the quality of the permethrin or how you mix it. Even if you don’t get it perfect and your permethrin ends up being 4% or 7%, it’s still likely to work.
The thing that determines its effectiveness is how you use it.
Most people use permethrin cream entirely wrong.
First, you need to apply it to your whole body. That means between your toes, between your fingers, in your armpits, in your belly button, between your bum cheeks – everywhere! Scabies can live anywhere on the body, and if you miss one, the eggs will be laid and the nightmare will start all over again.
The second thing is, you need to apply it twice. It’s unlikely you get all the mites the first time. That’s why it’s recommended to do a second application after 7 days.
There are also many more important things to know before you start your permethrin treatment.
If you’re about to treat yourself and your family with permethrin, please please please read this post about how to use it properly. It will outline everything you need to do to the exact detail, and will ensure you cure yourself as quickly and painlessly as possible.
Good luck!
Like I said, this is the most effective single treatment for scabies. If you do want to go full throttle and be 100% sure that your scabies is obliterated, check out my ultimate treatment guide. It’s free, and tells you everything you need to know. On the other hand, if you’re on a budget and can’t afford a whole collection of treatments, permethrin is your best bet. Use it properly, and the odds of you coming out smiling are very high.
Best of luck and wishing you back to health soon.
